Growing up in New Canaan, Connecticut I spent most of my life in or around this state. After graduating from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas I returned to Connecticut to begin my career in advertising, commuting to New York City for 10 years.
Nearly 16 years ago my wife and I made the decision to move our young family away from the hustle of lower Fairfield county to Newtown. What drew us to Newtown was quite simple – the shared sense of family and community. These two things continue to be a strong draw for people to move to Newtown and stay.
Over the years with my family I have come to know Newtown as a place increasingly steeped in community with a sense of unity, we cherish the life we have built here with neighbors and friends.
For nearly 15 years I worked in a corporate environment with companies like Young and Rubicam Advertising, Priceline and Pitney Bowes. I have directly supervised strong teams toward success…managing individual budgets exceeding $150 million dollars… and sitting across the table to strategize and negotiate with fortune 500 companies.
In 2003 I began an exciting time in my career when I opened my own media company, New England Media Group. I work closely with local and regional companies to advertise their services and events through both traditional media and digital media channels. My interaction with clients like the Darien Board of Education, the Southport Public Library, local chapters of the Red Cross and Post 53 EMS has given me the opportunity to engage with elected officials and volunteer in many of our neighboring towns. I am pleased to call Edmond Town Hall Theater one of New England Media Group’s clients.
Service in Newtown
For over two years I was a member of the Board of Managers for Edmond Town Hall. I was a strong advocate and idea generator for increasing the revenue streams for Edmond Town Hall. The town’s support is critical to sustaining Edmond Town Hall and I was instrumental in securing additional funds from the shrinking allocation of the 2016 budget. Although I have moved to another position I still have strong ties to Edmond Town Hall through various volunteer efforts.
In 2015 I took on the leadership position of Co-Chair for the committee for the new community center in town as we built the plan for the GE gift. I continue to be actively engaged as a member of the advisory council. Although we have a long road ahead of us I am proud of the work done to date by the committee, the advisory council and the involvement of various groups in our town.
I was thrilled to be elected to the Board of Education in 2015. I believe our children and their education is integral to the success of Newtown so I have thrown myself into this position 100%. I have been through 2 budget seasons – both of which we have put forth an education budget that passed with voters the first time. I led the Board of Education in the discussion resulting in a five year plan to reduce the “pay for play” cost structure by 20% a year. Also, I led the charge to add Fall sports to our Middle School.
Through my work on these boards and the community center committee I have gained a strong understanding of policies and procedures within a town government. There is more to learn I know – I have the thirst and the stamina to move forward.
Campaign for First Selectman
I want to be the First Selectman who builds on the tenets that the party and incumbent have successfully laid. I want to lead this community forward. When people shut off their lights at night I want them to feel content, safe and proud of the community they helped build.
The First Selectman must have a keen business sense, knowledge of town processes, strong financial sense, and the ability to make tough decisions. Equally as important in this town is that they have to have the character to lead and earn respect. This does not come by having the loudest voice. It comes from being humble, thoughtful, empathetic, and action oriented.
I will continue to stand by the principles I feel Newtown needs to prosper. I want to foster transparency in how Newtown is run and the vital decisions that are made. I want our residents to feel that they have insights into the financial decisions that impact their well being and their wallet. I want to balance fiscal and community decisions to maintain the integrity of the town we all cherish. No one wants to lose that sense of contentment and pride we feel when we drive past the Flag Pole, go to a movie at Edmond Town Hall or for an ice cream at our two local shops.
I will work hard to build upon the strong foundations Pat Llodra has put into place but also to prod and dissect procedures and initiatives when necessary, to listen and react to the views of our residents. Naturally, some priorities have shifted and refocused over the years. My emphasis will be on maintaining what is working and pivoting to accommodate the financial, educational and personal challenges we all face in 2017 and beyond.
Looking forward to seeing you all around town.
